Women's Health Services at Mercy Medical Center
The Women's Life Center at Mercy Medical Center offers women a convenient location to receive regular screenings for early detection of breast cancer and osteoporosis. With its own entrance and parking area on the west side of Mercy Medical Center, the Women’s Life Center makes it easy to get to appointments.
The Women’s Life Center meets the high quality standards of the American College of Radiology (ACR). All of our mammographers and sonographers are also accredited by the ACR and certified by the Food and Drug Administration. They also meet all requirements set by the Ohio Department of Health.
Mammography
The Mammography Center of the Mercy Women’s Life Center has earned certification by the Food and Drug Administration, a sign of our mammography program’s high quality. We have four state-of-the-art mammography units, and all exams are conducted by our registered mammography technologists.
To improve early detection of breast cancer, the Mammography Center now uses the R2 ImageChecker in conjunction with screening mammography.
In addition to their skill, our mammography technologists bring the Mercy Touch of compassion to the care they provide patients.

Adding Comfort to Mammography
The Women's Life Center at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield and the Radiology Department at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana are the first mammography facilities in the Dayton/Springfield area to offer a new product that dramatically eases the discomfort that many women feel when they get a mammogram.
The FDA-approved foam cushion, called the Women’s Touch MammoPad™, is designed to provide a softer, warmer mammogram. Mercy has begun using the MammoPad to encourage more women to comply with recommendations for regular screenings.
As a single-use, adhesive-backed foam cushion, the MammoPad attaches to the compression plates of the mammography device.
For more information about the MammoPad or to schedule a mammogram with Mercy's compassionate, dedicated staff, call the Mercy Mammography Center in Springfield at 937-390-5030 or the Radiology Department at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana at 937-484-6156.
Stereotactic Breast Biopsy
The stereotactic breast biopsy system at the Women’s Life Center is a simple, clinical procedure that quickly performs accurate needle biopsies to diagnose abnormalities in the breast.
The procedure is performed using local anesthesia, allowing patients to avoid a more invasive surgical biopsy. The system is designed to give the physician every advantage in diagnosing or ruling out cancer, while minimizing patients' discomfort.
Ultrasound
The breast health program of the Mercy Women's Life Center also uses state-of-the-art ultrasound technology to diagnose or rule out breast cancer. Ultrasound studies are conducted by registered diagnostic medical sonographers. Ultrasound, using high frequency sound waves to form an image, often is used to further evaluate abnormalities detected through a mammogram.
Ultrasound also is used at the Women's Life Center to guide physicians in procedures, such as removal of fluid from cysts and biopsies, in which breast tissue is collected for evaluation.
Other types of ultrasounds also are provided for women at the Women's Life Center, including studies of the gall bladder, kidneys, liver, pancreas, carotid artery and thyroid.
Bone Density Testing
Bone densitometry is a simple, painless test conducted at the Mercy Women’s Life Center to determine whether a person is experiencing osteoporosis, a loss of bone mass that weakens bones and can lead to fractures.
The densitometry test is conducted with the latest and most reliable equipment available for diagnosing osteoporosis.
Four out of five persons with osteoporosis are women, and postmenopausal women are at greatest risk. Factors that increase risk are menopause before age 45, Caucasian race or Asian ethnicity, thin or small build, family history, smoking, excessive alcohol use, inactive lifestyle and/or chronic use of medications such as steroids, excessive thyroid hormones and certain anticonvulsants.
Bone densitometry testing also is available for men at the Women’s Life Center.
