Women's Health Services at Mercy Memorial Hospital

The Radiology Department of Mercy Memorial Hospital provides women high quality diagnostic imaging services for early detection of breast cancer and osteoporosis. The Radiology Department is located on the ground floor of the hospital.

Mercy Memorial Hospital’s Radiology Deapartment meets the high quality standards of the American College of Radiology (ACR). In addition, our mammographers and sonographers are accredited by the ACR, certified by the Food and Drug Administration and meet all requirements set by the Ohio Department of Health.

Mammography

The mammography program of Mercy Memorial Hospital has earned certification by the Food and Drug Administration, a sign of our mammography program’s high quality. We have a state-of-the-art mammography unit, and all exams are conducted by a registered mammography technologist, who brings the Mercy Touch of compassion to the care she provides patients.

To improve early detection of breast cancer, we now use the R2 ImageChecker in conjunction with screening mammography.

Adding Comfort to Mammography

The Women's Life Center at Mercy Medical Center in Springfield and the Radiology Department at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana are the first mammography facilities in the Dayton/Springfield area to offer a new product that dramatically eases the discomfort that many women feel when they get a mammogram.

The FDA-approved foam cushion, called the Women’s Touch MammoPad™, is designed to provide a softer, warmer mammogram. Mercy has begun using the MammoPad to encourage more women to comply with recommendations for regular screenings.

As a single-use, adhesive-backed foam cushion, the MammoPad attaches to the compression plates of the mammography device.

For more information about the MammoPad or to schedule a mammogram with Mercy's compassionate, dedicated staff, call the Mercy Mammography Center in Springfield at 937-390-5030 or the Radiology Department at Mercy Memorial Hospital in Urbana at 937-484-6156.

Ultrasound

State-of-the-art ultrasound technology also is available at Mercy Memorial Hospital to diagnose or rule out breast cancer. Ultrasound, using high frequency sound waves to form an image, often is used to further evaluate abnormalities detected through a mammogram.

Ultrasound also is used at Mercy Memorial to diagnose a wide variety of other health conditions in men and women.

Bone Density Testing

Bone densitometry is a simple, painless test conducted at Mercy Memorial Hospital to determine whether a person is experiencing osteoporosis, a loss of bone mass that weakens bones and can lead to fractures. The densitometry test is conducted with the latest and most reliable equipment available for diagnosing osteoporosis. Four out of five persons with osteoporosis are women. Postmenopausal women are at greatest risk. Other factors that increase risk are menopause before age 45, Caucasian race or Asian ethnicity, thin or small build, family history, smoking, excessive alcohol use, inactive lifestyle and/or chronic use of medications such as steroids, excessive thyroid hormones and certain anticonvulsants. Bone densitometry testing also is available for men at Mercy Memorial Hospital. For more information on bone density testing, call the Mercy Memorial Hospital Radiology Department at 937-484-6156.
