Esophageal Stent Placement

Procedure Time
30-45 min.

Purpose
To confirm and dilate severely restricted areas of the esophagus.

Procedure

  • Patient is taken to IPU for IVs and labs drawn. Patient is then sent to Special Procedures.
  • Radiologist will discuss the procedure and answer questions.
  • Patient is placed on his right side. Anesthetic is sprayed into the back of the throat by the Radiologist. Mouthpiece is placed to hold mouth open.
  • Radiologist proceeds to advance guidewire down throat to stomach.
  • Stent catheter is then advanced over wire and advanced to stenotic area in esophagus.
  • Contrast may be injected for confirmation depending on Radiologist's preference.
  • Stent is released and x-ray is then taken with or without contrast for placement.
  • Patient is ready to leave depending on conscious sedation status. Directed to see referring physician for further orders.
  • Patient must have someone drive him home.
