Inferior Venacava Filter Placement

Procedure Time
15-20 min.

Purpose
To evaluate and treat emboli in the venous system.

  • Procedure
  • Patient is taken to IPU for prep, IVs and labs drawn. Patient is then sent to Special Procedures.
  • Radiologist will discuss the procedure and answer any questions.
  • Patient is placed on table and prepped for Radiologist to access femoral vein and insert catheter and advance into the Inferior Venacava.
  • Contrast will be injected to determine and confirm location of direct placement for filter and to measure venacava for proper filter.
  • The filter is then properly prepped and inserted and deployed.
  • Another contrast injection is done to isnure placement.
  • Catheter is then removed and pressure held until bleeding has stopped.
  • Patient is taken back to IPU for bed rest and observation for at least 4 hours.
  • Patient must have someone drive him home.
