Percutaneous Gastrostomy

Procedure Time
30 min.- 1 hour

Purpose
Purcutaneous Gastrostomy is a quick, simple and safe method of obtaining access to the stomach for long-term feeding, but it may also be used for gastric decompression, or rarely for simplified dilation of upper gastrointestinal stricture when a peripheral approach as failed.

Procedure

  • Patient will come to the IPU for labs, IV, etc.
  • Patient will be on his back for the procedure.
  • Nasogastric tube will be inserted so we can fill the stomach with air so that it can be visualized under fluoro.
  • A subcostal (below ribs) approach to the left of the mid-line is chosen with the assistance of fluoroscopy.
  • Contrast will be injected to confirm region of interest then gastric tube will be placed. It will be secured both internally and externally.
  • Nasogastric tube will then be removed.
  • Patient will go to IPU or floor for bed rest and frequent monitoring.
