Percutaneous Nephrostomy

Procedure time
30 min.-45 min.

Purpose
To drain kidney percutaneously due to obstructive hydronephrosis, if a retrograde urethral stent cannot be placed.

Procedure

  • Patient will come to the IPU for labs, IV, etc., and will then be sent to Special Procedures.
  • For his procedure where he will be placed on the table, on his stomach.
  • The Radiologist will then insert a needle through the back of the kidney of interest.
  • Contrast will then be injected to confirm proper entry.
  • At that point a nephrostomy catheter will be left in place sutured to patient's skin.
  • Patient will return to IPU or floor for frequent monitoring.
  • Patient must have someone drive them home.
