Permacath Placement

Procedure Time
30-45 min.

Purpose
To give the patient an access for long-term dialysis.

Procedure

  • Patient is taken to IPU for IVs and labs drawn. Patient is then taken to Special Procedures.
  • Radiologist will discuss the procedure with the patient, and answer questions.
  • Patient is then placed on the table and site of insertion is identified by ultrasound.
  • Patient is prepped for the procedure.
  • Venous access is obtained and wire advanced to maintain access.
  • Small pocket is made to house catheter.
  • Contrast may be injected to verify placement of catheter.
  • Catheter sutured in place to skin and dressed as Radiologist deems necessary.
  • Patient must have someone drive him home.
