Procedure time
30-45 minutes

Purpose
To diagnose GI bleeding or see what blood vessels may be feeding tumors.

Procedure

  • Patient is sent to IPU for shave, prep, IVs and to have labs drawn. Patient is then sent to Special Procedures.
  • Radiologist will discuss procedure with patient and answer questions.
  • Patient will then be placed on table.
  • Physician will stick groin and insert a catheter.
  • Injection made with X-ray dye and films obtained.
  • Physician will select and film different vessels.
  • Catheter will be removed and pressure held for 15 minutes or until bleeding stops.
  • Patient will return to IPU for 4-6 hours for bed rest.
  • Patient must have someone drive them home.
