Arterial Embolization
Procedure time
30 min.-1 hour
Purpose
To evaluate and define the relationship of the arteries and an aneurysm. Can be used for the control of bleeding, closing of arteriovenous malformations or fistulas; tumor palliation, organ ablation, and treatment of varicocele.
Procedure
- Physician will access femoral artery (stick groin), a catheter will be placed in the area of interest where contrast is injected and a series of pictures will be taken.
- Once the region is determined the embolotherapy can begin. This is where the introduction of the embolization solution or device can then be performed.
- If procedure is determined a success the catheter and sheath will be removed; pressure applied to stick site to clot artery stick.
- Band-aid or pressure dressing will be applied. Patient will go to IPU for bed rest and frequent monitoring.
