Carotid (DSA) Arteriogram

Procedure time
30-45 min.

Purpose
To diagnose any stenosis in the Carotid Arteries and their takeoffs from the Aortic Arch

Procedure

  • Patient is sent to IPU for prep, shaving of groin, IVs, labs drawn, and then taken to Special Procedures.
  • Physician will discuss procedure with patient and answer questions about the procedure.
  • Physician will access the femoral artery (stick groin), a catheter will be advanced to the aortic arch.
  • Contrast will be injected and films obtained in different positions.
  • After the exam is complete, sheath will be removed and pressure held at stick site for about 15 minutes or until bleeding stops.
  • Band-aid or dressing will be applied.
  • Patient is then taken back to IPU for bed rest and observation for about 4-6 hours.
  • Patient must have someone drive them home.
