Facilities & Services - Mercy Mental/Behavioral Health Services

If you or a loved one are feeling "down" for more than a couple of weeks or having difficulty functioning in daily life, you may be experiencing more than just the "blues". You may be suffering from a common, yet serious medical condition called clinical depression. Clinical depression is highly treatable, however, most people don't seek professional help because they don't understand the symptoms, or think that the "blues" will go away on its own, or are embarrassed to talk about how they are feeling. When you or a loved one needs mental health services, consider Mercy. We offer specialized treatment for individuals experiencing mental and/or behavioral health disturbances.

Mercy Hospital Clermont provides acute, inpatient treatment for adults. At Mercy Hospital Mt. Airy, we offer inpatient treatment for children and adolescents. At Mercy Hospital Western Hills, we provide inpatient treatment for seniors.

One of the quickest ways to determine if you have symptoms of depression, anxiety or bi-polar disorder is by taking a free, confidential screening test. Confidential screenings are provided by visiting the following web sites:

Depression Screen: www.depression-screening.org
Anxiety Screen: www.freedomfromfear.org
Bipolar Disorder Screen: www.dbsalliance.org/questionnaire/screening_intro.asp

Screening tests are not intended to provide a diagnosis, but may help identify depressive symptoms and determine whether further evaluation by a medical or mental health professional is necessary. As with any other illness, you should consult with your doctor if you think you might have symptoms of depression, anxiety or bipolar disorder.

Each season of our life brings its own changes, joys and challenges. This is especially true in the golden years of life—changes in lifestyle and physical activities can have an impact on how senior adults view and experience their lives.

Over time, senior adults may see a gradual decline in their ability to cope with daily activities. This is a signal that a serious problem may exist. If you or a loved one is experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, irritability or anxiety, contact the Senior Mental Health Center for special care at 389-5999.

Educational Programs and Events

Every 16 minutes in the United States, someone dies by suicide. This year thousands of men and women walked in over 100 communities across the United States, each contributing their voices to break the silence surrounding suicide.

The Cincinnati 2007 Out of the Darkness Community Walk was held at Ault Park. The Mercy Health Partners team consisted of 25 walkers/volunteers from the Mt. Airy and Clermont Behavioral Health Units. The Mercy Team raised $710 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). This money goes to vital research and education programs to prevent suicide and save lives, increase national awareness about depression and suicide, and assist survivors of suicide loss in the tri-state and across the country. Many of the participants walk in memory of a loved one lost to suicide. The Mercy Team this year walked in memory a former employee who died by suicide this past year.

Mercy Clermont Department of Behavioral Medicine partnered with the local chapter of AFSP in 2007 to help with suicide prevention through education. On November 17th, Program Educator & Community Liaison and board member for AFSP Cincinnati , Ann Hoffman-Ruffner helped coordinate Cincinnati's 3rd Annual Survivors of Suicide Day Conference. The conference was held at Receptions Conference Center in Eastgate with over 65 individuals participating, three times the number that attended last year. The day-long event was created for individuals who had lost someone to suicide and the clinicians who treat them. Dr. Tracey Scale, Medical Director of Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health Services, was the keynote speaker.

Anyone interested in learning about or participating in upcoming AFSP/suicide prevention events should contact Ann Hoffman-Ruffner at 732-8558. To obtain more information about Out of the Darkness Walks visit their web site at www.outofthedark.org.
