Glossary of Terms:
64-Slice CT Scan
The 64-Slice CT scan is the latest non-invasive scanner technology to recognize and detect cardiac disease. This new scanner is being utilized to evaluate the presence and severity of cardiac disease before symptoms begin and for patients with atypical chest pain. Click here for more information on the 64-Slice CT.
DEXA/Osteoporosis Scan
DEXA scanner for evaluation of osteoporosis is the latest technology and the most accurate way to assess for calcium loss and fracture risk in both adults and children. Osteoporosis due to calcium loss is the most common cause of bone fractures, including broken hip and spine fractures.
EKG The heart is a muscular pump made up of four chambers. The two upper chambers are called atria, and the two lower chambers are called ventricles. A natural electrical system causes the heart muscle to contract and pump blood through the heart to the lungs and the rest of the body. Electrocardriograms (EKG) measure the electrical impulses that can detect any irregularities in the functioning of your heart.
High Field MRI This High Field scanner is unique in that it has a very large opening that is flared at both ends, and more importantly, the magnet bore is only 3 feet in length, about half the length of the traditional tube type MRI. The large opening also accommodates large and claustrophobic patients. Because of the OPEN Flair and ultra short gantry configuration many patients with claustrophobia are able to be scanned in this very fast and high quality scanner. In addition, the High Field MRI can accommodate many patients weighing up to 550 pounds.
Open MRI A "open" MRI is open on three sides. In fact, it is so open that the patient slides under the magnet sideways. This OPEN configuration gives a comfortable feeling and insures completion of an excellent scan. Music can be provided by headphones and the patient is encouraged to bring in a favorite CD or tape. In most instances a family member or friend can accompany the patient into the scan room.
PET/CT Scan
The PET CT is the most modern technology available to diagnose and treat cancer in the timeliest manner; thus dramatically improving outcomes for patients. This technology, called a PET/CT scan, is a dual imaging process that operates much like a cancer radar system: PET (Positive Emission Tomography) identifies a foreign body, and CT (Computed Tomography) pinpoints its location. Click here for more information on the PET/CT.
Ultrasounds Ultrasound is a very valuable noninvasive diagnostic tool. It works by sending high frequency sound into the body and then reading the returning sound echoes from the internal organs. It allows for the real time visualization of structures such as cysts, tumors and stones. Ultrasound can detect enlarged kidney, liver and pancreas structures, abnormal gall bladder and gall stones, breast masses and cysts, thyroid masses, enlargement of the ovaries and uterus, normal and ectopic pregnancies.
