The PET/CT Scanner
Mercy Hospitals now offer the latest technology available to diagnose and treat cancer in the timeliest manner; thus dramatically improving outcomes for patients.
This technology, called a PET/CT scan, is a dual imaging process that operates much like a cancer radar system: PET (Positive Emission Tomography) identifies a foreign body, and CT (Computed Tomography) pinpoints its location.
PET technology is very good at detecting a tumor or cancerous cell and CT provides exquisite detail on exactly where it is located, for example whether it’s at the edge of a lung or in the lymph nodes. Knowing the exact location of a tumor is critical in developing the treatment plan; so is identifying the stage of the cancer.
While some healthcare providers offer PET scans alone, few in the area offer the combined PET/CT scan, an outpatient service which takes about 30 minutes to complete. The scan takes place in a mobile unit at Mercy Clermont one day per week and at Fairfield two days per week. The PET/CT technology is a collaborative between the hospitals and Shared PET/CT Imaging.
A physician referral/prescription is required for a scan. To make an appointment, please call 513/95-MERCY.
