Total Shoulder Replacement

Patients who suffer from stiff and painful shoulder joints due to wear and overuse, chronic illness such as rheumatoid arthritis, or have a traumatic injury such as a fracture due to a fall may benefit from a total shoulder replacement.  Shoulder replacement surgery almost always reduces joint pain and stiffness, as well as increasing strength, mobility, and quality of life.  In a total shoulder replacement, our orthopaedic surgeons (doctors who treat bone and joint problems) skillfully replace the worn, damaged bone ends of the shoulder joint that painfully rub together with a metal and plastic artificial implant called a prosthesis.  The new prosthesis provides a smooth surface for easier joint movement.
