Substance Abuse

Up to 40 percent of industrial fatalities and 47 percent of injuries can be linked to alcohol consumption. Nearly 70 percent of all current adult illegal drug users are employed.

Untreated Depression

A 1993 study estimated that the economic burden of depression was $44 billion. 55 percent of that amount was attributed to workplace costs, including absenteeism and reductions in productivity.

Workplace Violence

One wife or child in every 21 is being physically abused 3 to 4 times per year. Violence in the workplace is caused by a variety of factors, including job stress, job-related conflicts, layoffs and firings, accessibility of weapons, and domestic problems carried over from the home.

Culturally Diverse Workforce

Over 50% of the workforce are minority cultures and this number is expected to increase. This includes non-whites, females, and immigrants.

Work and Family Issues

Nearly three times as many employers offer child care benefits today compared to 1988. People are living longer and the elderly population is growing. As a result, increasing numbers of workers are taking care of both children and aging parents.

For every dollar an employer invests in an EAP, they generally save anywhere from $5 - $16. The average annual cost for an EAP ranges from $12 to $25 per employee.
