Mercy's Integrated Approach
Mercy's pulmonary rehabilitation program provides comprehensive, up-to-date pulmonary rehabilitation care. Mercy's approach to treatment is centered on a model of health and wellness, rather than disability or disease.
The Mercy Team
Pulmonary rehabilitation services are provided by a team of healthcare professionals. Registered nurses, exercise specialists, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, pharmacists, social workers, spiritual professionals and dietitians work closely with patient and physician to achieve the best results possible.
Getting Started
Your physician makes the referral to our program. While we supervise and monitor your progress, you remain under a doctor's care. Your doctor will receive periodic reports from our staff.
Ready to Go
Participants are scheduled for an Entrance Session to evaluate present health status and obtain necessary medical information. This session will help the staff identify specific goals. This process helps participants set personal goals and get answers to any questions about the program. Because family support is so important, we encourage participants to bring someone along to share in this get-acquainted class.
Get Moving
Exercise sessions are designed to promote cardiovascular training, build muscle strength and improve flexibility. Three times a week, participants visit our center for a one-hour exercise session. Each session has a 5-10 minute cool-down period. All sessions are supervised by Registered Nurses or Respiratory Therapists. During each session the nurses and respiratory therapists will check your heart rate, blood pressure and oxygen saturation to monitor your condition and progress.
Learning Along the Way
Education is a key component of pulmonary rehab. Participants learn how the lungs work and new breathing techniques to help control shortness of breath. The program also deals with relaxation and stress reduction techniques, nutrition and counseling, smoking cessation, medications and how to manage activities of daily living.
Staying Healthy - A Way of Life
Pulmonary rehabilitation does not end with completion of the program. To maintain your health, you need to practice all you have learned for the rest of your life. Mercy's overall approach to your treatment is based on a model of health and wellness, not just managing your disease. We will provide you with information on exercise programs and information on other lifestyle programs designed to help you maintain your health.
For additional information about pulmonary rehabilitation, please ask your doctor.
