Mercy West Expansion: Information on the proposed new hospital in Green Township

Mercy Health Partners is committed to expanding opportunities for care throughout Cincinnati and western Hamilton County. This site is designed to provide up-to-date information on the proposed project for a new Mercy hospital in Green Township, as well as future plans, as they develop, for the Mercy Hospital Mt. Airy and Mercy Hospital Western Hills campuses.

Mercy Health Partners has acquired the rights to purchase 60 acres of land in Green Township to build a new healthcare facility for the west side community. The land for this hospital is located on North Bend Road, between Kleeman and Boomer Roads, just off the I-74/North Bend Road exit.

Green Township Trustees have unanimously approved the land-use plan.  Additional steps are still required before the project gets final approval.

Mercy Health Partners plans to use this centrally-located site as the hub for our efforts to expand access to acute care, primary care and a variety of outpatient services, including chronic care management in Green Township and throughout western Hamilton County. This project will help us continue our Mission and the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy and the Franciscan Sisters of the Poor, who began meeting the healthcare needs of the communities we serve more than 150 years ago.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Why does Mercy want to build a new hospital in Green Township?

Mercy Health Partners is building a new hospital in Green Township to expand access to needed healthcare services in Cincinnati and western Hamilton County. Our plan is to transition the inpatient services of Mercy Mt. Airy and Mercy Western Hills to a more convenient, centralized location in Green Township and expand the level of care and programs we offer. This will provide more residents throughout the western Hamilton County and southeast Indiana area with easier access to a wider range of healthcare services.

  1. What features will the hospital in Green Township have?

The hospital in Green Township will offer the latest advancements in patient care and comfort, such as private rooms with plenty of natural light and more space for visitors. It will be a state-of-the-art facility with cutting-edge technology and will attract some of the leading physicians throughout Greater Cincinnati.

Services will include a comprehensive cancer program, heart care – open heart surgery, inpatient/outpatient surgery, emergency care, and a neurology program.

The hospital campus will also maintain green space and provide walking/biking trails that will connect to the trail system being planned by Green Township.

  1. What process must Mercy Health Partners go through to build this hospital?

To make the Mercy West Plan a reality, we are pursuing a zoning change for the proposed site. The Green Township Trustees have voted unanimously to approve our plan. The Hamilton County Regional Planning Commission will now consider it.

  1. How will this new hospital be funded?

Funding for the hospital in Green Township will be provided by Mercy Health Partners with assistance through our parent organization, Catholic Healthcare Partners.

  1. Will this hospital negatively affect traffic in Green Township? And, what is Mercy Health Partners doing to ensure that doesn’t happen?

Mercy Health Partners is conducting a Traffic Impact Study with the Hamilton County Engineer’s office to assess current traffic flow, how the hospital would impact that flow, and what recommendations should be made to address that impact in Green Township.

  1. What happens to property values surrounding hospitals?

The Green Township Administration reported that their research of communities with hospitals throughout Greater Cincinnati shows hospitals have no negative impact on the property values in the surrounding neighborhoods.

  1. Will the new hospital increase crime in the surrounding area in Green Township?

No. Research by Green Township Police Chief Bart West found that in other communities with hospitals – Fairfield, Anderson Township, Montgomery, Westwood, Mt. Airy – there was no correlation between crime and the presence of a hospital.

  1. Will EMS runs in the area increase the noise level around St. Ignatius School and Church?

No. Only a very small percentage of ambulance runs (approx. 10%) involve sirens. Most ambulance runs do not require extra speed or sirens since the patient is generally stabilized before being transported. Research also shows that for many patients, the sirens add stress that can worsen their condition.

  1. What will happen to the hospitals in Mt. Airy and Western Hills?

Plans for the Mercy Mt. Airy and Mercy Western Hills campuses are being considered. Re-use committees are being finalized. A committee for each site will be put in place that include local residents, community leaders, physicians and Mercy employees. Committee members will help determine the best use of the campuses going forward.

  1. How is Mercy Health Partners integrating community input into its hospital plans?

Mercy Health Partners is integrating community input into the Mercy West Plan by participating in public meetings, working closely with the Green Township Trustees – which represent the community interests, and considering the suggestions and concerns we receive from residents by phone, email, and the Contact Us link on this web site.
