Free community lectures to help public prepare for flu.

9/22/2009     --

Cold weather is often an indication that flu season is around the corner. To help you understand and avoid both the seasonal flu and H1N1 flu, Dr. Scott Kotzin and Dr. Rajesh Davit of Mercy Medical Associates are offering a free lecture on the subject.

“Each year more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from seasonal flu complications, which is why it is important to understand the flu and know how to prevent it,” said Dr. Davit of Mercy Medical Associates – Liberty Falls Family Medicine.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, on average 5 to 20 percent of the population gets the seasonal flu and about 36,000 people die from flu-related causes. Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications.

“Prevention is key,” adds Dr. Kotzin. “We want to reach out to the community to help them be as prepared as possible through education and prevention, and reduce the number of flu cases.”

Two flu lectures will be offered. The first will be offered Tuesday, October 27 at The Manor House,7440 S. Mason Montgomery Road, in Mason. The second will be on Wednesday, October 28 at the LOCATION. Both lectures are from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Flu shots for seasonal flu will be available only for lecture attendees for $25.

Among those who should be vaccinated for the flu include: children aged 6 months to 19 years; pregnant women; people aged 50 and over; and anyone with chronic medical conditions.
