Chinese Exercises (Qigong and T'ai Chi) May Help Prevent Diabetes

A small pilot study has shown that practicing Chinese exercises such as t'ai chi and qigong may help people prevent diabetes.

Researchers from the University of Queensland in Australia found that study participants who took part in the exercise program for three months showed improvement in A1C levels, blood pressure, weight, and waist measurement. They also experienced increased flexibility, more energy and improved sleeping.

T'ai chi and qigong are ancient forms of Chinese movement. They use muscles in different ways than other types of exercise. The researchers theorize that these movements may improve the way the body uses glucose.

Larger studies of the effects of t'ai chi and qigong on diabetes are now ongoing.
