Diabetes and Uncontrolled High Blood Pressure

More than two thirds of people with diabetes have high blood pressure (hypertension). Many are aware of it, but their blood pressure remains poorly controlled.

A recent study, the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, looked at 1,500 people and found that
  • 71% of the participants with diabetes had high blood pressure or were on medication for the condition
  • 29% were unaware their blood pressure was high
  • Of those receiving treatment for high blood pressure, only 43% had reduced their condition to an acceptable level
High blood pressure greatly increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. This study points to the need for people with diabetes to work closely with their doctors and other healthcare providers to detect high blood pressure early and make sure it's under control.
