Don’t Overdo it with Vitamins
The Food Standards Agency, a consumer watchdog group in England, is warning consumers that certain vitamins, taken in high doses, can be harmful. Among the findings:
- Large doses of vitamin C (more than 1,000 milligrams per day), calcium (more than 1,500 milligrams per day) and iron (more than 17 milligrams per day) can cause abdominal pain and diarrhea
- More than 10 milligrams of vitamin B6 per day can cause loss of feeling in the arms and legs
- Beta-carotene, in large doses taken over a long period of time, can be harmful to people who smoke
As a general rule, it’s never a good idea to take vitamins in large doses, unless your doctor specifically recommends it.
