Depression Drug may Help Alzheimer’s Patients
Twenty five percent of people with Alzheimer’s disease also suffer from depression. This makes things difficult not only for the Alzheimer’s patients themselves, but also for their caregivers.
A new study has shown that a common depression medication, Zoloft, can improve the quality of life for Alzheimer’s patients and seems to slow down functional decline. In the study, Alzheimer’s patients who took Zoloft had decreased behavioral disturbances and improved activities of daily living.
It’s difficult enough to care for an Alzheimer’s patient who isn’t depressed. If you’re caring for a loved one who has Alzheimer’s, talk with their doctor about whether it’s possible that depression is an issue, and whether treating it is an option.
