Specifically designed for the patient, the Hip & Knee Orthopaedic Institute at Mercy Hospital offers an environment that is patient focused. From preoperative education, through surgery, recovery and rehabilitation, everything is designed for the special needs of our patients. What to expect

Prior to your surgery you will meet with staff for important education and orientation session. During this session, you will learn about the details of your surgery and recovery, and complete your pre-admission testing. You will also meet with other joint replacement candidates who will share this experience with you. Then it’s on to improving the quality of your life and taking back your independence.



Day One

Your surgery will take place on a Monday or Tuesday anytime between 7:30 a.m. and early afternoon. Since you have completed your pre-admission testing, you need only arrive one to three hours before your surgery depending on the time of your procedure. Please dress comfortably- sweats, t-shirts, jogging shoes and shorts. Surgery will take between an hour and a half to two and a half-hours. After recovery, you will be brought to your private room by mid-afternoon or early evening.

Day Two to Three

Recuperate in peace, under the care of health care professionals who specialize in working with orthopedic surgery patients. Share your stories with fellow patients who are going through exactly what you are. As you approach then end of you stay, enjoy a celebratory meal to mark you successful surgery.

Day Four to Day Five

You will leave the Hip & Knee Orthopaedic Institute at Mercy Hospital on Thursday or Friday (depending on the day of your procedure). Congratulations! You’re taking the first steps on the road to improving the quality of your life and taking back your independence. If you are not quite ready to go home Mercy Hospital’s Skilled Nursing Facility will give you the extra time and care, including additional rehabilitation that will provide you with a smooth transition home. You may also be assisted in your home by Mercy Home Health, a non-profit, hospital-based certified agency that provides specialized care and support services to adults in the comfort of their own home. Mercy Home Health professionals help patients and their families safely provide the care that is needed, where they are most comfortable- at home.

Our Medical Director

Theodore J. Tomaszewski, M.D. is Medical Director of the Hip & Knee Orthopaedic Institute at Mercy Hospital. A graduate of the University of Scranton, Dr. Tomaszewski earned his medical degree from Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, DC. He is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and performs advanced surgical techniques, including minimally invasive hip & knee replacements. You’ll receive your care from Dr. Tomaszewski and other highly skilled surgeons in a center designed especially for joint replacement patients.
