The Acute Rehabilitation Unit at Springfield Regional Medical Center is an inpatient unit that provides physical and cognitive rehabilitation programs for individuals who have experienced a disabling injury or illness. Our goal is to ensure an optimum level of recovery while providing cost-effective outcomes for our patients. The unit, located on the 3rd floor of Springfield Regional Medical Center - Fountain Boulevard campus, is operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Treatment Team
The transition from hospital to home requires the support of a specialized and experienced treatment team that may include the following:
- Audiologists
- Consulting and primary care physicians
- Occupational therapists
- Orthotic/prosthetic specialists
- Physiatrist
- Physical therapists
- Psychiatrists
- Registered Nurses
- Social workers/case managers
- Speech/language pathologists
Family members are also a very important part of the team. We encourage family participation in our staff and family conferences, training sessions and discharge planning.

Common Functional Problems Benefiting from Rehabilitation
- Difficulty performing activities of daily living such as eating, grooming, dressing, bathing and homemaking
- Balance and coordination impairments
- Difficulty swallowing
- Difficulty moving in bed or from one place to another
- Memory deficits, judgment difficulties, and/or speech-language problems in conjunction with physical limitation
- Inability to work or function in the community due to physical impairment
- Weakness or limited motion in arms, legs, or trunk

Admissions
The following guidelines may be used to determine if a patient is an appropriate candidate:
- Patient has a physical impairment that limits functionally activity
- Patient requires assistance in activities of daily living, energy conservation, use of adaptive equipment, mobility, application of safety techniques and cognitive impairments
- Patient's disability is of recent onset or recent progression
- Patient requires intensive rehabilitation services and has not been previously exposed to rehabilitation or there has been a significant change in the patient's condition
- Evidence exists for the potential to achieve functional gain from a program of intensive rehabilitation

Referrals
