Electrophysiology Services

Normally, electricity flows through the heart in a regular, measured pattern. These electrical impulses are the basis for heart muscle contractions. Problems may develop anywhere along the electrical pathways, disrupting the regular beating or the heart and causing an abnormal heart rhythm, or arrhythmia. Left untreated, arrhythmias can lead to serious consequences such as heart failure or sudden cardiac arrest, two of the leading causes of death in the United States.

Determining the most appropriate and effective treatment for the various forms of cardiac arrhythmia is based upon a comprehensive medical examination and use of special tests that help electrophysiologists (cardiologists with advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmias) properly identify the rhythm problem. Treatment options vary according to the specific arrhythmia, and the cardiac electrophysiologist is able to match the best treatment to the individual needs of the patient.

We provide comprehensive care for a variety of cardiac arrhythmia disorders, including:

Electrophysiology Studies
An EP study is conducted in order to measure exactly how the electrical impulses flow through your heart during a heartbeat. A small catheter is placed into your heart to record electrical impulses and to determine areas of abnormal electrical conduction information.

Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD)
A small device is implanted into the upper chest area to help control your heart rhythm (the speed and pattern of your heartbeat). The ICD monitor senses the abnormal rhythm and sends one or more electrical impulses or shocks to the heart restoring normal rhythm.

Permanent Pacemaker Implantation
This procedure is recommended to correct some types of bradycardia (slower than normal heartbeat) or heart block. A pulse generator is implanted under the skin in the upper chest area and lead wires are also attached.

Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT)
With CRT, a biventricular pacemaker or defibrillator is placed under the skin to assist a heart with weakened heart muscle and electrical conduction abnormalities. Used in combination with medical therapy, CRT plays an important role in heart failure management. Even though the heart walls may be weak, CRT synchronizes the heartbeat, restoring the heart's mechanical sequence, helping the heart to work more efficiently, improving symptoms of heart failure.

Catheter Ablation
Catheter ablation is a procedure that eliminates small abnormal electrical circuits within the heart that are causing an arrhythmia. Catheter ablation removes the abnormal circuits or tissues that start and maintain abnormal, fast heart rhythms. Although there are several forms of catheter ablation, the two most common are radiofrequency ablation and cryoablation. This treatment may result in no more symptoms, no more heart medications, and less worrying about your heart.
