Bereavement Services

Community Mercy Hospice provides compassionate support and education for bereaved adults, children and teenagers, and their families.

With guidance and instruction through our bereavement services, these individuals recognize they are not alone and learn to cope with the loss of a loved one in his or her own special way.

Adult Grief Support Group

The adult grief support group is a gathering of people who have come together to share their feelings and concerns with experienced grief facilitators.

The group facilitators are knowledgeable and helpful to those who are grieving. The facilitators understand that each situation is unique and they can respectfully address the needs of each individual in practical ways. Meetings are a combination of instruction and discussion. Participants who require extended counseling will receive recommendations suited to their special needs.

Among topics discussed:

  • Grief as a natural process
  • Understanding the grief process
  • Coping with feeling
  • Losing control and not understanding yourself
  • Depression
  • Dreams
  • Holidays and Anniversaries
  • Facing daily tasks
  • Sharing memories

Groups meetings are 1.5 hours a week over a five week period. It is expected that participants commit themselves to attending all sessions in fairness to the group and themselves.

The adult grief support group is free of charge.

The KIDS Group

It is ever so important for our society to understand the need for improved support and care for bereaved young people and their families.

"Fixing" or "curing" a grieving youth is not the goal of Community Mercy Hospice. Educators and grief counselors "walk with" the child, teaching them to trust in their natural ability to restore hope in their lives. There is no defining "recovery" time from grief. It is not an illness. Getting through a bereavement period varies from child to child, but gradually, with the right support, the grief becomes less painful over time.

The KIDS group, for children and teens ages 3 to 18, provides a safe, comfortable environment for children to express their feelings, experiences and problems following the loss of a loved one and to learn methods for coping with the loss.

An adult must accompany the child and stay on site during the program. Those children who have not attended a previous session are asked to bring photos and small memory items.

Sessions are held routinely throughout the school year every third Monday, September through May.

The KIDS bereavement group is free of charge.

Camp Phoenix

Community Mercy Hospice offers a unique opportunity to reach out and meet the special needs of area children who are experiencing grief due the loss of a loved one.

Camp Phoenix Kids

Camp Phoenix provides support in a fun, safe environment that combines recreational activities with support groups. By interacting with other children who share similar grief experiences, children recognize they are not alone in the grieving process and learn valuable skills on how to cope with their loss.
