The Many Roles of Our Volunteers

Through Community Mercy Hospice, caring individuals who want a rewarding volunteer opportunity can find a variety of ways to make a positive difference in the lives of people with terminal illnesses and their families.

After completing free, specialized hospice training, Community Mercy Hospice volunteers can choose how they wish to serve. Whatever they choose to do, volunteers play a significant role in Community Mercy Hospice.

Opportunities for volunteers include:

• Home Care volunteers—provide respite for the caregiver, companionship for the patient and general support as needed.
• Administrative volunteers—assume general office tasks, assist in medical records, compile packets, organize files and provide the hospice team with a variety of clerical support services.
• Musician volunteers—use musical talents in voice or instruments to provide stimulation and enjoyment and enhance the quality of life in the hospice program.
• Speaker's Bureau volunteers—help educate the public about Community Mercy Hospice by speaking to various groups in the community, and/or manning the hospice exhibit at health fairs and other community events.
• Special Projects volunteers—assist with county fairs, fund raisers, special crafts, and baking cookies for hospice functions.
• Transportation volunteers—provide transportation to fill special needs of hospice patients and their family.
• Marketing Team volunteers—assist in various community relations projects such as distributing flyers and brochures and working at special events.
• Guardian Angel volunteers—sit by the bedside of an imminently dying patient who might otherwise be alone. These volunteers provide support for patients, arriving family members and staff of nursing homes. Specialized training is provided.
