Diabetes Mellitus is characterized by high blood glucose levels. Glucose intolerance that develops during pregnancy is called Gestational Diabetes. Blood glucose levels can be controlled by simply following a nutritionally balanced meal plan and regular exercise. Occasionally, the mother may require insulin injections to achieve optimal control.
Diabetes Education Team
Learning how to keep your blood sugars within acceptable levels during pregnancy will benefit you and your baby. The diabetes education team will help you experience an enjoyable pregnancy and have a healthy baby as we work together to keep your blood sugars under control. The team consists of a registered dietitian and nurse diabetes educators.
Dietitian
- Develops a nutritionally complete meal plan designed specifically for you and your growing baby
- Provides you with information to make grocery shopping and meal planning easy
- Helps with eating out
Nurse
- Helps you understand how pregnancy affects your blood sugar
- Teaches you how to use the blood glucose meter
- Provides instructions on insulin usage (if needed)

The initial appointment with the diabetic education team lasts approximately two hours. Follow-up visits are two to three weeks following the first visit as needed until delivery. Classes are held on Fridays, but other appointment times are available from the Diabetes Management Center.
