This tool provides you with information on how well St. Mary's's hospitals and other East Tennessee hospitals care for all their adult patients with certain medical conditions. This information will help you compare the quality of care hospitals provide. Hospital Compare was created through the efforts of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and organizations that represent hospitals, doctors, employers, accrediting organizations, other Federal agencies and the public. HealthGrades
HealthGrades independently analyzes nearly 5,000 hospitals in all 50 states and the District of Columbia for the ratings, objectively assessing their clinical outcomes and quality. The data utilized is licensed from the federal government’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The HealthGrades ratings measure whether patient outcomes for each of more than two dozen procedures and diagnoses are better than expected (5-Star), as expected (3-Star) or worse than expected (1-Star).     Treatment of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
COPD is a group of diseases that include chronic bronchitis, emphysema and asthmatic bronchitis. The common characteristic of these diseases is obstruction to airflow out of the lungs and the common symptom is shortness of breath. In the U.S. an estimated 90 percent of COPD is due to smoking. Treatment includes avoidance of smoking, and bronchodilators and oxygen for those with advanced disease.
