 Quality Data United States Department of Health and Human Services This tool provides you with information on how well St. Mary's's hospitals and other East Tennessee hospitals care for all their adult patients with certain medical conditions. This information will help you compare the quality of care hospitals provide. Hospital Compare was created through the efforts of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and organizations that represent hospitals, doctors, employers, accrediting organizations, other Federal agencies and the public. HealthGrades HealthGrades independently analyzes nearly 5,000 hospitals in all 50 states and the District of Columbia for the ratings, objectively assessing their clinical outcomes and quality. The data utilized is licensed from the federal government’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The HealthGrades ratings measure whether patient outcomes for each of more than two dozen procedures and diagnoses are better than expected (5-Star), as expected (3-Star) or worse than expected (1-Star). The overall rating of Orthopedic Services is a combined rating of total knee replacement, total hip replacement, partial hip replacement, hip fracture repair, back and neck surgery (spinal fusion), and back and neck surgery (except spinal fusion). To receive a rating in this specialty area, St. Mary’s had to receive five stars in five of the six medical issues. St. Mary's was among the top 10 percent of hospitals in this specialty area, and therefore selected as a HealthGrades 2007 Specialty Excellence Award recipient.
