I was playing handball 22 years ago at about age 61 and I had a sensation halfway through the game. So, I took a short break, and proceeded to finish the first and second games. But, during the third game I lunged for a shot and had a funny sensation on my left side. I decided to sit out and watch the guys for awhile. Eventually though, I felt a tingling in my left arm. At that point, I took a shower and the next day decided to call my family doctor. I went in to have an EKG performed, which came out fine. So, the doctor sent me to St. V’s to have a stress test/EKG. I had a cardiac cath and the doctor said I flunked that badly. They called me back for another cath, which showed three bad blocks. The doctor scheduled open heart surgery immediately.
I am now 83 years old. Since my surgery, I still snow ski, I walk five days a week, and I work part time. When I see other folks who are in the hospital for heart problems I try to stop and talk to them – tell them what I went through – and hope to serve as inspiration.
