Accreditations
To ensure that our facilities follow the best recommended practices in the healthcare industry, we seek accreditations from many professional organizations, academic associations and consumer advocates. The following accreditations are achievements for each of our facilities.
The Joint Commission
Mercy facilities are accredited by The Joint Commission which is the nation’s leading standards-setting and accrediting body in healthcare. They focus on improving the quality and safety of care provided by healthcare organizations.
A survey is performed at each of our facilities once every three years by The Joint Commission and is used to evaluate our compliance with nationally established Joint Commission Standards. Accreditation is awarded to a healthcare organization that is in compliance with all standards at the time of the on-site survey or has successfully addressed requirements for improvement within 90 days of the survey.
All Mercy facilities are Joint Commission accredited, that includes: Mercy Hospital of Defiance, Mercy Tiffin Hospital, Mercy Willard Hospital, Mercy St. Anne Hospital, Mercy St. Charles Hospital and Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center (Mercy Children’s as part of St. V’s).
Laboratory Services
The laboratory services of all Mercy facilities are accredited by either The College of American Pathologists (CAP) or The Joint Commission. The goal of laboratory accreditation is to improve the quality of services through voluntary participation, professional peer review, education and established performance standards. Upon successful completion of an inspection the laboratory is awarded CAP accreditation or The Joint Commission accreditation and becomes part of an exclusive group of laboratories worldwide to have met the highest standards of excellence.
Cancer Center Accreditation
Oncology programs earning recognition from the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons offer high-quality cancer care. Only one in four hospitals that treat cancer receive this special approval. It recognizes the quality of comprehensive cancer care available at a facility and offers a commitment that you will have access to all of the various medical specialists who are involved in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.
The best in today's cancer care can be found in a Commission on Cancer approved oncology program. The cancer programs at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, Mercy St. Charles Hospital and Mercy St. Anne Hospital have received that approval.
Individual Hospital Accreditations
Mercy St. Charles Hospital
Level III Trauma Center
The American College of Surgeons has verified Mercy St. Charles Hospital as a Level III Trauma Center. It is staffed and equipped to provide prompt assessment, resuscitation, emergency operations and stabilization of patients.
Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
St. Charles holds the designation of a Level II for its newborn services from the Ohio Department of Health. To hold the designation it is required to have the capability to care for newborns and selected extremely ill newborns.
Accredited Chest Pain Center
St. Charles is an accredited Chest Pain Center by the Society of Chest Pain Centers. The designation of Accredited Chest Pain Center is given to those facilities that have made a commitment to providing patients with consistent quality in the delivery of emergency care based on national guidelines established by leaders in cardiovascular and emergency medicine.
Rehabilitation Accreditation
In 2007, the Commission on Acreditation of Rehab Facilities awarded St. Charles Mercy Acute Rehab a 3-year accreditation for their services.
Sleep Disorders Center Accreditation
Mercy Sleep Disorders Center at St. Charles recently received a five-year program re-accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). To receive a five-year accreditation, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM.
Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center (St. V’s)
Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP)
St. Vincent Mercy Medical is also HFAP accredited. The HFAP is one of only two voluntary programs in the United States authorized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to survey hospitals under Medicare. The program, which is recognized by federal and state governments, is used to validate the quality of care provided by a facility.
Level I Trauma Center with Pediatric Commitment
The trauma center at St. V’s, including Mercy Children’s Hospital, has been verified a Level One trauma center by the American College of Surgeons. Level I is the highest possible verification. The trauma center has held the Level I distinction for the last 10 years. The center features on-site trauma surgeons 365 days a year, a complete operating team for trauma 24 hours a day, and dedicated trauma services. Continuous training, research, educating the community and medical education are all components of the Level I verification.
Our commitment to continuous training of an already exceptional staff, to conducting vital research, and to educating the community on injury prevention all contributed to an evaluation that verified how we meet and surpass the highest standards set by the American College of surgeons.
Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
St. V’s holds the highest designation, Level III, from the Ohio Department of Health, for its newborn care services. A Level III designation requires a facility to have the capabilities to care for all newborns, including those that are extremely Ill.
Accredited Chest Pain Center
St. V’s is an accredited Chest Pain Center by the Society of Chest Pain Centers.
