Nancy S., says "throughout my entire patient stay everyone just showed me so much attention and care and compassion."

"Excellent care and service at Mercy Hospital of Defiance inspires patient to write letter to the editor"

Following a two-day inpatient stay at Mercy Hospital of Defiance, Nancy S. was so impressed by and grateful for the care she received, she decided to share her experience with readers of the Defiance Crescent News. In a “letter to the editor,” she publicly acknowledged the “wonderful experience” she had at Mercy Defiance.

“Many times people presume better care and expertise are available at city hospitals than in smaller local ones,” Nancy wrote. “This letter is to encourage readers to give Mercy Defiance an opportunity to demonstrate that is not always true. The cleanliness and spaciousness of my room, the friendliness and kindness of everyone, including those in housekeeping, the chaplain, people distributing meals, X-ray technicians, nurses and doctors, and the excellent attention given to solving my health problems, all contributed to a very positive experience.

“I appreciated the personal touch – professional people just dropping in to show they cared, and attendants going the extra mile to make me feel valued as a person and not just a patient. Thank you, Mercy staff, Dr. Brose, Dr. Al-Jadda, Dr. Reeves, Dr. Shaw and Dr. Roy…” ( Paul Brose, MD, Internal Medicine; Souheil Al-Jadda, MD, General Surgery; JD Reeves, MD, Internal Medicine; John Shaw, MD, General Surgery; and Vicki Roy, MD, Internal Medicine.)

Nancy said her overall experience was wonderful, and a few moments in particular stood out as examples of employees going above and beyond what she expected from her caregivers.

“I was on a lot of antibiotics, so I thought I should be eating some yogurt, but I didn’t see it on the menu,” Nancy said. “I asked the woman who brought my food if it would be possible to get some, and she asked what flavor I would like, then listed options she thought were available. I asked for vanilla, and she disappeared for quite some time, finally returning with a couple of choices for me. Since the kitchen did not have vanilla and I had told her I should not eat blueberry, she went to her own personal stash and brought me some of her own.”

On another occasion, Nancy was talking with a woman from housekeeping, and they discovered they shared a love for books by the same author.

“She said she had a book by this author in her car that she had planned to drop off at a book-swap,” Nancy said. “Instead, she offered to bring it in for me to read. And, when I mentioned to the chaplain that I missed my daily devotional, he brought me something to read. Throughout my entire visit, everyone just showed me so much attention and care and compassion. I am glad to know we have this resource here in Defiance and am telling everyone I know that it is not necessary to go far for good care.”
