"Small comforts make a big impression on surgical patient at St. V's

Sometimes, it’s the little things that carry the most weight in how a patient perceives her care experience. Deborah B.’s outpatient laparoscopic cholecystectomy (gall-bladder removal) surgery was hardly dramatic, but the kindness and compassion she experienced at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center made a tremendous impression on her.

“This was the first surgery I've had since having my tonsils out at age 8, so I was a little nervous,” Deborah admits. “I had been prepared for the hospital staff to be detached, busy and to not trust me to understand what was going on well enough to bother explaining anything to me. I was pleasantly surprised to find the opposite is true at St. V’s.”

Deborah said she received excellent care and service from the moment she registered through her discharge.

“The third-year medical student assigned to my case was especially open and informative,” she said. “He talked to me while I was waiting for Dr. Rosol (Stanley Rosol, DO, FACOS), and he explained the entire procedure in detail, in a way that I could understand and without once sounding condescending or irritated that I was asking so many questions. I am extremely grateful to him for taking the time to talk to me and treat me not only with respect but also as an equal.”

Deborah’s positive experiences continued throughout her surgical and post-surgical experiences.

“Dr. Rosol and his surgical team were all immensely good natured and terrifically skilled,” Deborah said. “I left surgery on Nov. 17, 2006, with just four tiny scars, and today only two are slightly visible. I had a little bit of tenderness and fatigue after the surgery, but I was amazed at how quickly I recovered.”

Deborah spent about an hour-and-a-half in the hospital post-surgery and said she credited the “gracious concern and outright good humor of everyone there” with helping her immediately start to feel better. She may not remember the names of her care providers, but she will never forget their compassionate, quality care.

“Thank you all for everything you did for me,” she said. “The entire staff went well above and beyond the call of duty in making me feel comfortable, relaxed and at ease. I sincerely hope I never need to have anything else removed, but if I do, I will definitely return to St. V’s to have it done. You are all truly amazing.”
