About Us Research means more treatment options available to you! Clinical Research is a branch of medical science that has doctors and patients working together to improve medicine. Clinical Research is used to determine the safety and effectiveness of medications, devices, diagnostic products and treatment regimens intended for human use. The research may be used for prevention, treatment, diagnosis or for the relief of symptoms in a disease. Participants in clinical trials can play a more active role in their own healthcare, gain access to new research treatments before they are widely available and help others by contributing to medical research. Clinical trials are not for everyone, and sometimes new drugs or medical devices turn out not to work. However, many times the research leads to important medical advances that can benefit participants and future patients. The Clinical Research Program at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center started in 1977 with Dr. Luis Jauregui in the Infectious Desease Research Department. The Medical Center program has grown over the years and expanded to include other specialty areas, such as Pulmonary, Cardiac and Sleep research.
