Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center Cardiac Care - 2008

Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center is pleased it has been recognized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and Premier Healthcare Alliance as a top performer in the Hospital Quality Incentive Demonstration (HQID) project.

Based on third-year results from the HQID project, St. Vincent ranked in the top 10 percent of hospitals participating in the project for overall quality in treating patients with heart failure and in the top 20 percent of hospitals in the project for treating patients with acute myocardial infraction and for successful outcomes via the coronary artery bypass graft.

Over 250 hospitals across the country are participating in the HQID project. The project is the first national project of its kind that looks at the quality of patient care via processes and outcome measures in five key clinical areas: acute myocardial infarction (heart attack); heart failure; coronary artery bypass graft; pneumonia; and hip and knee replacement.

Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center and Mercy Children's Hospital

The Joint Commission recognized Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center as a best practice model for its medication reconciliation program, which accurately ensures that all medications a patient is taking, both prescription and over the counter, are safe and do not interfere with one another.

As a result of the recognition, The Joint Commission profiled St. Vincent and Mercy Children's Hopsital in its "Focus on Medication Reconciliation" educational program, which was broadcast over its Satellite Network, to which more than 700 hospitals throughout the country subscribe. Through the program, St. Vincent and Mercy Children's are profiled as a model for hospitals across the country on how to implement a medication reconciliation program successfully. The Joint Commission is the nation's predominant standards-setting and accrediting body in healthcare, evaluating and accrediting more than 15,000 healthcare organizations and programs in the United States.

Mercy - Most Wired Health System

Mercy is pleased to be named one of the nation's Most Wired Health Systems for 2008 by Hospitals & Health Networks the journal of the American Hospital Association, which conducts the Most Wired Survey and Benchmarking Study annually.

Mercy is recognized for being one of only 100 hospitals and health systems in the nation who are using information technology systems throughout all facets of healthcare: quality, customer service, public health and safety, business processes and workforce issues. Steve Mickus, president and chief executive officer for Mercy said, "We are deeply committed to giving physicians, patients and their families access to the most advanced technology that enhances quality of care."

Recent enhancements at Mercy include: digital radiology images in all metro Toledo facilities and electronic health record (EHR) implementation at all seven Mercy Hospitals. According to Jim Albin, vice president and chief information officer for Mercy, the technology enhancements are important for patient safety and the quality care that hospitals provide.

Mercy - Graduate Medical Education

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education awarded a five year accreditation to Mercy teaching hospitals (Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center and Mercy St. Charles Hospital) and commended Mercy Graduate Medical Education for its "Best Practices".

The Institutional Review Committee (IRC), which is a standing committee of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) that accredits 702 sponsoring institutions across the nation, recently reviewed Mercy and its teaching hospitals for accreditation.

MHP was awarded "Continued Accreditation" for 5 years with no citations or concerns. The next site visit will be in April of 2011. This places Mercy as one of the top ranking institutions for GME (Graduate Medical Education) quality and is a testimony to its standards of excellence for graduate medical education. The committee went further in its commendation by citing Mercy's use of Best Practices.

Quoting from the letter from the ACGME "The IRC commends the institution on its best practices and encourages the GMEC (Graduate Medical Education Committee) to continue its efforts to support excellence in GME. In particular, The IRC noted the institution's adaptation of the Balanced Score Card approach as an organizational tool to create accountabilities, transparency, and alignment of resources with its GME initiatives."

This high praise from the ACGME confirms what everyone in GME at Mercy have long known, medical education at Mercy ranks with the best in the country.

Mercy St. Charles Hospital - Press Ganey Compass Award

Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center is a 2008 Press Ganey Compass Award winner for outstanding performance improvement in the Inpatient category. The Compass Awards recognize those organizations that demonstrate a commitment to using patient satisfaction data to improve the quality of healthcare. Press Ganey is the company that administers Mercy’ Patient Satisfaction Survey.

Mercy St. Anne Hospital – Breast Imaging Center of Excellence

The American College of Radiology (ACR) has designated the Women’s Care Center at St. Anne a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. This recognition highlights the excellent quality the Women’s Care Center provides. The Breast Imaging Center of Excellence designation is awarded to centers that have achieved accreditation by the ACR in stereotatic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy and by either the ACR or and FDA-approved state accrediting body in mammography. The ACR Breast Imaging Center of Excellence designation signifies that the St. Anne Women’s Care Center provides these essential services to the community at the highest standard of the radiology profession.

Mercy Tiffin Hospital - Five-Star Hospital

Mercy Tiffin Hospital has been named as a 2007 National Excellence in Healthcare hospital in four categories according to Professional Research Consultants (PRC), a nationally-known healthcare marketing research company headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. Mercy Tiffin Hospital received a 5-Star Award for excellence in Patient Safety and three 4-Star Awards for excellence in Nursing, Medical Records & Information, and Hospital Administration.

The 5-Star Award designation is given annually to any healthcare facility that scores in the top ten percent based on the percentage of medical staff that rate the facility as “excellent” for the specific standard measured. Physicians on the medical staff at Mercy Tiffin Hospital rated the hospital in the top 10 percent nationally for patient safety.

The 4-Star Award designation is given annually to healthcare facilities that score in the top 25 percent nationally based on the percentage of medical staff members who rate the facility as “excellent” for the standard measured. Mercy Tiffin Hospital physicians answered “excellent” when ranking Nursing Care, Medical Records Management & Information, and Administration enough times for Mercy Tiffin to be ranked in the top 25 percent for those three categories.

Mercy Hosptial of Tiffin - Quality Respiratory Care Recognition

Mercy Tiffin Hospital has earned Quality Respiratory Care Recognition (QRCR) from the American Association for Respiratory Care. Hospitals earning the QRCR designation ensure patient safety by adhering to a strict set of criteria governing their respiratory care services.

St. Charles Acute Rehab Unit - 16th Annual Prism Awards

The St. Charles Acute Rehab Unit was one of nine companies and organizations nominated for the Maumee Bay Chamber of Commerce's 16th Annual Prism Awards, an initiative to honor excellence. The Rehab unit provides comprehensive rehabilitation services for patients who have suffered strokes, brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, amputation or trauma, with the goal of returning the patient to his or her home. The unit is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities and has a patient-family satisfaction rate of 4.8 on a 5.0 scale.
