Internal Medicine Curriculum

St. Elizabeth Internal Medicine Residency is a three-year, fully accredited ACGME program meeting all of the requirements of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

The residency is affiliated with the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM). Residents receive training in all aspects of inpatient and outpatient management, invasive and noninvasive procedures and all subspecialty areas. This prepares them for the diverse challenges of medical practice.

First Year:
Rotations include general internal medicine, ambulatory medicine, medical intensive care unit, coronary care unit and emergency medicine.

Second Year:
Residents are exposed to subspecialty rotations emphasizing acquisition of in-depth specialty knowledge. Many of these rotations can be structured as 100% ambulatory experiences. There is a six-week block rotation in ambulatory medicine. Residents function in a supervisory capacity on the inpatient general medicine service and the coronary care unit.

Third Year:
Residents continue to gain exposure to electives in a wide range of fields. There are six-week blocks in consult medicine and ambulatory care. Residents function in a supervisory capacity on the inpatient general medicine service and the medical intensive care unit.

Ambulatory Clinic:
The ambulatory care clinic has approximately 2,500 active patients with over 7,000 clinic visits per year. Each resident cares for a panel of patients in the clinic, one half day per week, and serves as the patient’s primary care physician throughout his / her residency.
