Department of Research
Humility of Mary Health Partners (HMHP) offers residents, faculty and attendings a unique opportunity to engage in scholarly activities and research.
The Department of Research offers didactics and lectures to residency programs in statistics, research design and methods and other related topics. The Sr. Director Medical Education and Research, David Gemmel, PhD, also participates in department journal clubs.
Services provided by the Department of Research include biostatistical consulting, manuscript editing, proposal development, and human subjects protection.
The Department also is responsible for the HMHP Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the Medical Research Committee (MRC), which provides peer review and funding for intra-mural research.
In addition, the Medical Research Committee and faculty host an annual Resident Research Day, where residents and faculty vie for awards in both poster and oral venues.
Other staff in the department include clinical research coordinators and research assistants. The nursing staff has extensive clinical trial experience with both government and industry sponsored research in drug and device studies. During the summer months, the department offers internship opportunities for students.

David Gemmel, PhD
Sr. Director Medical Education and Research, Humility of Mary Health Partners
David Gemmel is a graduate of Youngstown State University (YSU) and the University of Akron. Dr. Gemmel has worked closely with local agencies and physicians on a diverse list of topics including, the epidemiology of pediatric lead poisoning. He has served as an instructor and adjunct professor at YSU and Kent State University (KSU) for courses in gerontology, medical sociology, statistics, research design and methods, social theory and evaluation. He has also served as community medicine clerkship director and instructor in biostatistics for Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) in the MPH program.
Dr. Gemmel earned his doctorate at KSU in 2002 in medical sociology. He’s currently director of research for Humility of Mary Health Partners (2000-present), with oversight responsibilities for the Medical Research Committee, the Institutional Review Board, and clinical trials in the department.
