The nurses at St. Elizabeth and St. Joseph health centers have done it again. The American Nurses Credentialing Center’s (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program® for excellence in nursing has once again designated St. Elizabeth’s and St. Joseph’s as Magnet hospitals.

Magnet recognition is to nursing what a Lombardi trophy is to football, what a gold medal is to the Olympics,” says Bob Shroder, president and CEO of Humility of Mary Health Partners. “To earn Magnet status once is a tremendous accomplishment and a great source of pride for our nurses. To retain Magnet status for another four years really underscores the commitment of our entire staff to continually strive harder each day to meet the health care needs of the people we serve.”

Less than 4 percent of hospitals in the United States have achieved Magnet status; and even fewer are re-designated. In 2002, St. Elizabeth’s and St. Joseph’s were the first hospitals in Ohio to receive Magnet Recognition and among the first 100 hospitals in the nation to earn that honor. They also are the first hospitals in Ohio to achieve re-designation.

Included in the Magnet re-designation are St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, St. Joseph Health Center in Warren, St. Elizabeth emergency and diagnostic centers in Boardman and Austintown, and the St. Joseph Outpatient Surgery Center in Howland.

According to the ANCC, Magnet designation is widely accepted as the gold standard of patient care. The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes excellence and professionalism in nursing. Applicants undergo an extensive evaluation, and members who are awarded Magnet status must continue to maintain rigorous standards as part of their four-year designation. To reapply for and receive Magnet status for an additional four years is confirmation of the hospitals’ resolve to deliver the highest level of care in nursing today.

Research shows that Magnet hospitals are more effective at attracting and keeping quality nurses.

Magnet status as a sign of nursing excellence is becoming more and more recognized in the popular press. Drs. Mehmet Oz and Michael Roizen, authors of YOU: The Smart Patient recently said on ABC News’ “Good Morning America” that “nurse Magnet hospitals are where the best nurses work…You want to be where the nurses want to be.” (March 30, 2006).
