Minimally Invasive Total Knee Replacement
Orthopaedic surgeons agree that this new technique has changed total knee replacement surgery. The short incision total knee replacement is a surgical technique using a smaller incision that requires less muscle dissection, which may result in more rapid and less painful recovery with better early range of motion and improved function.
The procedure involves the use of modified instruments to place the same clinically proven implants used in standard surgery, but through a smaller incision. The minimally invasive replacement surgery is performed through one four to six-inch incision instead of the larger eight- to 12-inch incision used with the standard surgical technique. This approach, combined with advanced anesthesia protocols, has the potential to significantly reduce pain by sparing muscles and tendons that historically have been cut during standard total knee replacement surgery.
Candidates for minimally invasive total knee replacement procedure include individuals: Who have had a primary care doctor or orthopedic surgeon tell them they need a knee replacement Who have knee structure that is stable and don’t suffer from severe bone loss around the knee Who have not had prior open knee surgery on the same knee Whose weight is proportionate to their height
Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement
The surgical procedure for hip replacement is similar to total knee replacement, but there is less soft-tissue dissection with hip replacement. A single, minimally invasive hip incision may measure only three to six inches. It depends on the size of the patient and the difficulty of the procedure.
The incision is usually placed over the side of the hip. The muscles and tendons are split or detached, but to a lesser extent than the traditional hip replacement operation. They are routinely repaired after the surgeon places the implants. This encourages healing and helps prevent dislocation of the hip.
Reported benefits of less invasive hip replacement include:
Less pain More cosmetic incisions Less muscle damage Faster Rehabilitation Shorter hospital stay
