Oncology Nurse Navigator Program
What is the Nurse Navigator Program?
The Nurse Navigator program helps patients, families, and caregivers find help with the many needs that could arise during the cancer journey. Nurse Navigators link those dealing with cancer to needed programs and resources.
A Compassionate and Knowledgeable Guide
An Oncology Certified Nurse, the Nurse Navigator serves as a compassionate and knowledgeable guide, steering patients through an often overwhelming and intimidating health care system so they can participate confidently in their treatment. Available any time and dedicated to their cancer patients, the Nurse Navigator serves as:
Facilitators for patient care to help ensure patient compliance and understanding of physician recommendations
A support person to help patients understand and cope with the emotions that accompany a breast or lung cancer diagnosis
A manager in assessing educational, financial and social needs, and appropriately referring to the proper source of help
An advocate to ensure patient needs are met in a timely manner, questions are answered, and fear and anxiety are reduced
Referrals
The Nurse Navigator works closely with the Humility of Mary Oncology department physicians and staff. In many cases, they are advised of a newly-diagnosed patient and will contact the patient. Referrals also come from doctor's offices, and patients may call the nurse navigator directly.
