Regional Trauma Network
Together, St. Joseph and St. Elizabeth Health Centers form the region’s only trauma network. St. Elizabeth Health Center is the area’s only Level I Trauma Center – the highest level possible – for adults and children. St. Joseph Health Center is the first hospital in Trumbull County verified as a Level III Trauma Center.
This partnership between hospitals assures that even the most severely injured patients can receive the treatment they need close to home, easing some of the burden faced by families who might otherwise have to travel to Cleveland or Pittsburgh during their loved one’s hospitalization.
As a Level I trauma center, St. Elizabeth's has the resources necessary to care for the most seriously injured patients, whether due to a motor vehicle crash, fall, bicycle crash, sports injury, pedestrian injury or gunshot wound. When a trauma patient arrives in the emergency department, a team of more than 15 experts responds immediately. In addition to dedicated trauma surgeons, departments such as radiology/CT scan, blood bank/laboratory, anesthesia, respiratory, operating room, and surgical intensive care unit are ready to respond at a moment's notice.
Once admitted, other individuals such as a clinical pharmacist, dietician, physical therapists, trauma case manager, and rehabilitation become involved to make sure the trauma patient has the best possible outcome. As a Level 1 trauma center, St. Elizabeth’s is actively involved in scientific research to continually improve the care it provides and is a leader in education, prevention, and outreach activities.
St. Joseph Health Center’s Level III facility is a trauma center with a highly organized system for getting seriously injured patients the immediate care they need and also takes an active role in injury prevention and educational outreach programs.
“The trauma center designation starts with our emergency department, and takes into consideration the hospital as a whole and the care we can provide injured patients from the time they enter our doors through their rehabilitation and release,” stated John Finizio, St. Joseph’s President.
Presentations are available to groups on injury prevention for the mature adult, violence prevention, firearm safety, and the dangers of drinking and driving, just to name a few. For more information on HMHP’s prevention programs, call St. Elizabeth’s, 330-480- 8876, or St. Joseph’s, 330-841-4066.
