  Michael S. Kavic, MD FACS
Program Director
Dr. Kavic received his medical degree from Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee.  He completed a one-year internship at St. Francis Hospital in Pittsburgh and residency at St. Elizabeth Health Center.  He is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, certified by the American Board of Laser Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Professor of Surgery at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of medicine, and Adjunct Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh.  Dr. Kavic is a founding member of the American Hernia Society and the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.  He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons (JSLS), and a member of seven editorial boards. 

  Nancy L. Gantt, MD FACS
Associate Director of Education

Dr. Gantt received her medical degree from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine and completed her residency at the Hospitals of the University Health Center of Pittsburgh; she also had one year of research in pediatric surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.  Dr. Gantt is Associate Professor of Surgery at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) and Clerkship Director for NEOUCOM’s surgery program at St. Elizabeth Health Center. Her research has included total abdominal visceral transplantation and sentinel lymph node biopsy in breast cancer.  She has made many presentations on breast cancer screening and current surgical therapy of breast cancer. Dr. Gantt is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and diplomate of the American Board of Surgeons.

  Ronald A. Rhodes, MD FACS

Dr. Rhodes is a summa cum laude graduate of Youngstown State University, and the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.  He completed his five-year General Surgery Residency at St. Elizabeth Health Center in 1993.  Dr. Rhodes is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery.  He received the “Teaching Attending of the Year” award from the St. Elizabeth Health Center’s surgical residents in 1998 and 2003.  After being in private practice in Youngstown for 11 years, he joined the faculty of St. Elizabeth Health Center in May 2004 as Co-Director of the Surgical Clinics and Associate Program Director of the General Surgery Residency Program.  His surgical interests include gastrointestinal endoscopy, minimally invasive, gastrointestinal and biliary surgery. 

  Vincent W. Vanek, MD FACS

Dr. Vanek received his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine and completed his five-year residency program at St. Elizabeth Health Center.  He is a diplomat of the American Board of Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a Certified Nutrition Support Physician, a Professor of Surgery at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.  As Director of Research in the Department of Surgery, he is advisor to the surgical residents in their research projects and assists them in design, statistical analysis, date processing, and preparation of manuscripts.  Dr. Vanek is Director of the Nutrition Support Team, a member of the Credentials Committee of CIGNA Health System, a member of the Board of Directors of the Ohio Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, and the Society’s past president.  

Richard A. Memo, MD FACS
Chairman, Department of Surgery
Dr. Memo received his medical degree from the St. Louis University School of Medicine and completed a surgical and urologic residency at Ohio State University School of Medicine. Dr. Memo is a past president of the Mahoning County Medical Society and was member-at-large and Secretary/Treasurer for the St. Elizabeth Health Center Medical Staff. He is a past secretary, treasurer, and president of the Ohio Urological Society, and a past treasurer and president of the North Central Section of the American Urological Association (AUA). Currently, Dr. Memo is secretary/treasurer of the American Association of Clinical Urologists (AACU) and board member of the AUA. Dr. Memo was recently elected Chairman of the Department of Surgery at St. Elizabeth Health Center. Dr. Memo is certified by the American Board of Urology and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He is also Associate Professor of Clinical Urology at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine.

  C. Michael Dunham, MD FACS
Assistant Director Trauma/Critical Care Services
Dr. Dunham received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee and completed his internship and residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center and fellowship in Trauma/Critical Care at the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems and Baltimore Shock Trauma Center.  He is also a Professor of Surgery and a leader in research in the Department of Surgery.  His research activities include clinical shock, experimental hypovolemic shock, liver injuries, tracheal intubation, injury severity methodologies and pulmonary embolus in trauma patients. His scholarly activities include memberships in: the Subcommittee and Clinical Pathways Committee for the Eastern Association for Surgery of Trauma, the Northeastern Ohio Emergency Medical System Council, and the Regional Physician’s Advisory Council. Dr. Dunahm is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and diplomate of the American Board of Surgeons.

  Brian S. Gruber, MD
Director of Trauma/Critical Care
Dr. Gruber is a Youngstown native who received his MD from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine and completed his General Surgery residency at St. Elizabeth Health Center in 2003. He completed his Multidisciplinary Critical Care fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2004. Dr. Gruber is a Clinical Instructor of Surgery at Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, a Candidate of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the Society of Critical Care Medicine, Society of American Gastointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons and Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.

Heath A. Dorion, MD
Assistant Program Director of General Surgery
Dr. Dorion is a 1997 graduate of NEOUCOM, and completed his general surgery residency at St.Elizabeth Health Center in 2002. He served as a Major, General Surgery Element Chief at Wright-Patterson Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio and as an attending surgeon in General and Trauma surgery at Miami Valley Hospital from 2002 through 2006. He was certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery in 2004. Dr. Dorion joined the surgical faculty of SEHC in July 2006 as an Assistant Program Director of the general surgery residency, with interests in general and trauma surgery and surgical education. He resides in Austintown with his wife and three children.
